Mainstream Migration and Development
Background
The migration of courses from My eLearning Vista and other Faculty-based LMS’s is the final component of the LMS Upgrade Project. This final step will enable UNSW to begin taking advantage of the new capabilities afforded by the LMS technology refresh and disseminate more widely the examples of good technology-enabled learning and teaching (TELT) developed through the Faculties of Excellence Initiative (FEI).
Purpose
The Mainstream Migration & Development will:
1. Transfer learning content from My eLearning Vista to the new LMS
2. Facilitate an orderly transition for teaching staff and students to the new LMS by:
- Raising awareness of the project, its deliverables and time frames with teaching, administrative and support staff
- Providing information and access for staff and students to support and training resources, professional learning opportunities and administrative processes
3. Monitor and address issues related to availability and performance of the new LMS
4. Provide recommendations regarding the decommissioning of My eLearning Vista
Process
1. Transfer learning from My eLearning Vista to the new LMS
- Blackboard will provide IT at UNSW with software and documentation supporting the transfer of learning content from the current LMS (My eLearning Vista) to the new LMS (Blackboard 9)
- IT at UNSW and Blackboard will prepare a plan for the migration of My eLearning Vista learning content including a detailed migration path
- IT at UNSW with the support of Blackboard technical staff will test the migration path from My eLearning Vista (Blackboard Vista 3) to the new LMS (Blackboard 9)
- The Project Team will communicate with teaching staff regarding any possible issues with the transfer of learning content, in particular any loss of content that may result
- IT at UNSW will execute the migration plan to make migrated content available for course development
- Teaching and teaching support staff will commence redevelopment of courses using content transferred to the new LMS in late September, 2009
2. Facilitate an orderly transition for teaching staff and students to the new LMS
- The Project Team will provide information to staff and students regarding changes they may expect by using the new LMS, the implications of administrative and support process changes and the transfer of content developed in My eLearning Vista to the new LMS
- The Project Team with LMS Support Staff and myUNSW support staff will ensure an intuitive and well-communicated navigational structure is in place to access the new LMS, and that time frames for granting access, developing courses and use of the LMS for teaching are well communicated.
3. Monitor and address issues related to availability and performance of the new LMS
- IT at UNSW and the Project Team will monitor the availability and performance of the new LMS closely to ensure it meets defined standards for availability and performance, take steps to address reliability and performance issues, and communicate reliability and performance metrics
- The Project Team with LMS Support Staff and myUNSW support staff will ensure an intuitive and well-communicated navigational structure is in place to access the new LMS, and that time frames for granting access, developing courses and use of the LMS for teaching are well communicated.
- Blackboard will conduct an extensive performance audit of the new LMS and provide recommendations for improved performance and reliability to IT at UNSW
4. Provide recommendations regarding the decommissioning of My eLearning Vista
Though the project aims to transition all courses from My eLearning Vista to the new LMS, for a variety of reasons it may not be desirable to immediately decommission the My eLearning Vista application at that time. Thus the Project Team will make recommendations to IT at UNSW regarding issues and time frames for the decommissioning of My eLearning Vista but will not take direct responsibility for completing these activities
